Cups like this would typically be used in Japan to enjoy various types of Japanese tea, but as each of these cups has a handle they would be just as well suited to the Western tea table.
Aizu Wakamatsu has a history of offering practical products that are suited to everyday use. Ceramics production is not widely regarded as a typical Aizu craft, but the region does have a long tradition of product “curation” by local craft producers, and these items offer one example of the various initiatives being undertaken by Aizu producers to develop new opportunities for local craftshops.
The glaze (*yuyaku*) offers each item a one-of-a-kind appeal. These items were produced under Ten Craft supervision, and were made possible by the diverse range of craft skills that can still be accessed in the Aizu region.
